Triple insulated wire, also known as triple insulated magnet wire, is a specialized type of winding wire made with a single copper conductor and three extruded layers of insulation, instead of the enamel coating used on standard magnet wire. Remington Industries offers this 155°C triple insulated winding wire in gauges from 16 AWG to 32 AWG, insulated with modified ETFE for applications that require reinforced winding wire with voltage and dielectric ratings superior to typical magnet wire. Because this reinforced insulation meets creepage and clearance requirements on its own, transformer and coil winders can build compliant, compact designs without adding supplemental insulation, tape, or sleeving.
What Sets This Wire Apart
Unlike standard magnet wire, which relies on a single enamel layer, triple insulated wire is built by extruding three layers of ETFE directly over the conductor so the wire itself satisfies the insulation requirement rather than depending on external materials. Because of this quality, it is sometimes called reinforced insulated wire, reinforced winding wire, or ETFE reinforced winding wire depending on the application.
Where TIW Is Used
This construction is common in SMPS wire and switching transformer wire applications, where designers need high dielectric strength in a small footprint. It also shows up as medical winding wire in equipment governed by IEC 60601-1, and in any transformer wire application where UL, IEC, or VDE reinforced-insulation compliance is required.
Ratings and Certifications
Remington's 155°C triple insulated winding wire carries UL Recognized Component status along with VDE certification and compliance to IEC 60950, IEC 62368-1, IEC 60601-1, and IEC 61558-1, depending on gauge. Voltage ratings run from roughly 495 Vrms to 1,500 Vpk across those standards, with breakdown voltage tested per IEC 60851-5.
